The Coolest Name in Sport
Today it was announced that a player, recently released by Celtic, signed with Hull City of the England Premier League.
But not just any player.
The player with the coolest name in sport: the Dutch footballer Johannes "Jan" Vennegoor of Hesselink.
It seems that his ancestors back in the 17th century intermarried, and both the Vennegoor and Hesselink names carried equal social weight. So, instead of choosing between them, they chose both.
But why the "of"? The Dutch word of translated to English is "or."
So I guess his ancestors decided that we all could take our pick.
I like both.
With the "of" untranslated.
But by only one name would smell as sweet.
